Commissioning specs

Setup notes and briefing numbers for Commissioning.

Power, air and base checks

The Commissioning specs page sets out the technical points that need checking before a machine is signed off for use. It helps workshops review installation requirements, service connections and early running checks in one place. That gives buyers a clearer basis for planning machine setup on site.

Before handover, the machine must be checked against the incoming supply, available air pressure and the condition of the concrete where it will stand. For lathes, boring machines and valve grinding equipment, the sign-off points affect alignment, lubrication, guarding and first start settings in South African workshop conditions.

Commissioning records should start with the machine as delivered, including loose tooling, guards, manuals and any transport brackets still fitted. A short inspection list helps the fitter note leaks, damaged cables, missing parts and unusual noise before production work begins.

What must be signed off

The specification should capture the machine model, supply voltage, spindle speeds checked, lubrication points filled and safety devices tested. It also needs clearance around the machine for loading stock, removing swarf and reaching service panels without shifting other equipment.

Include the foundation details, lifting points used, levelling readings and any adjustments made after the machine was positioned. Commissioning is planned around the machine type and where it will stand, so give both when you use the contact form.

  • Supply voltage and phase recorded
  • Lubrication points filled and checked
  • Loose items listed before first run

Conditions affecting site acceptance

A machine installed in Crown Mines may face different dust levels, access limits and power stability from one going to Durban or Cape Town. Commissioning specs should therefore note the workshop environment, forklift access, cable routing and whether extraction, coolant return or compressed air lines are ready at the position.

Coastal air can change storage and rust-prevention requirements before startup, while inland dust places more importance on wiping slides, covers and electrical cabinets. Load shedding and generator changeover should also be considered where control systems, pumps or phase-sensitive equipment are being tested.

Details to include with the machine

Provide the machine name, model, known faults, available power on site and clear photographs of the installed position. Add any missing accessories, required tooling, coolant arrangement and whether the machine has been idle for a long period before commissioning.

Installation notes are most useful when they are completed while the machine, paperwork and site observations are still in front of the fitter or buyer. Keep the commissioning sheet with the service record so later checks on backlash, spindle heat, pump operation or switchgear can be compared properly.
